After initial doubts, I have really fallen for Instagram. The interface is perfect, the filters are nice, and it fits right in to and definitely enhances my existing iPhone-everyday-photos habit.

I’m getting my camera back this weekend!

I’m really happy about that. This absence from my camera has really helped ramp up my appreciation of it.

artistic developments

This new year means new creative efforts for me. One of my Christmas gifts from my parents was a macro lens for my Canon T2i (!), and another gift I’m giving myself is a short course in working with art clay silver starting at the end of this month.
I managed to leave my camera with its new lens at my parents’ house in the madness of packing to return home after two weeks there, so the “creation” part of my creative effort is off to a stunted start… the silver lining is that I enjoy creative limitations. My iPhone-photo tumblr blog onion of infinite leaf is going strong, I still have the Lumix LX-3, and of course there is always drawing.

Our house is also sort of an ongoing expression of joint functional creative design too, as much as we can given limited space and budget anyway. I’m planning to do another set of photographs of the current state of our place, as any new (or vintage in some cases) things have found their way in here somehow and it’s looking pretty different than the last house tour I shot. So, look for that once I get my camera back!

Rocket Fish

These earrings are a just-because surprise present from Dustin I received on Friday, and they are amazing. (I love fish and the artistic representation like fish like crazy, for anyone unaware of this fact.) These are one of a kind, with eyes made of carnelian stones and the rest sterling silver. They were made by Peggy Johnson, an awesome jewelry maker who draws inspiration from nature and every-day home objects (like toasters). Check out her Etsy shop here and her blog here.

The Giant Golden Book of Biology

I won this book on eBay tonight – it was published in 1961, and illustrated by Charley Harper. Probably the coolest biology book ever, aesthetically; very excited to get it! It’s in slightly rough shape but considering its age (and the deal I got on it) I’m quite happy. All pages are complete and intact.

I’m a huge fan of the artists at Nervous System, who use biology-inspired shapes and patterns coupled with high-tech methods to create amazing jewelry. I recently got this ring from them, which is actually 3D printed out of a durable but flexible nylon; how cool is that? I will be collecting more of their stuff in the future, this is so exactly up my alley it’s crazy.
